You can get as fine grained control over your data structures in Scheme as in C, really. And complexity and knowledge is the domain often used as an example of the eminent domain of these languages. The ill feelings and reservation most people feel, IMO they originate from the 'toy' implementations of the past. And of mistakes made when implementing an algorithm. I have seen up to many orders of magnitude slowdowns come from errors in IO or the 'shadowing' of a defined function. And global optimizations should not be impossible if the program is truly written in a funtional style. MvH Dan Andersson
