let me try: the FM title is an attempt of FIDE to make money. to increase their
target market, they have even created a new product called "candidate master" or
CM, which you get for reaching a 2200 rating.

"worth nothing"? i don't know - being an FM myself (the swiss federation pays
for you automatically if you reach the required rating...), i know it's not all
that much, but hey, it just means you reached a 2300 rating at some time. that's
a bit better than nothing i would say :-)
