OK, although I do not know how sacred the specific time control is; or whether
the fics server software could be hacked appropriately.

Those who could not automatically connect to the server could still be allowed
to enter moves manually, I guess.

Is not having to be present _such_ a big thing?  Although I do not see why you
could not still insist on the need for people to physically travel to a distant
location if this was thought necessary.
