Hello,

looking through all the postings here I guess its time to say something about
the intention of the ELO rating list at http://www.schachcomputer.info.

1. We decided to test only stand alome chess computers and not against PC
programs (this is done in the SSDF). We think there is the mismatch between the
(by 100 points lowered) SSDF results and the real strength of the chess
computers, which was introduced in the SSDF more or less due to the big gab
between the PC programs and the "old machines".

We did not make any restriction regarding whether or not a chess computer is
commercially available or not. Even tuned machines of the same program are
welcome just to study the influence of the speed on the program strength.
Therefore we also added the V11, knowing that in the meanwhile quite a lot
machines are existing (maybe more than R40s!) and we were able to collect more
than 200 tournament (!) games in less than 1 year! Of course one can discuss
whether or not the chess machines shouls show up, but as at least the CM at 14
MHz are absolutely identical to the Mephisto RISC modules we decided to merge
them. Therefore we also took the 32 MHz CM in the list.

2. Regarding the opponents of the Ruffian program I agree that the selection is
very small so far, but I guess its a starting point. Please do not forget that
there is a huge statistcal error. In addition to that, we have to rely on the
contributions from all the (rare) chess friends who are a proud owner of Ruuds
machine. As you know there are only 25 machines and I guess to my best knowledge
only up to 6 guys are playing with it (Many thanks to them all!!)! I tried to
match the Ruffian program against the strongest programs I have, but not
everybody owns a R40 or Turniermachines :-(. We also thought about matches via
internet on the chessgate server but this is even more time consuming and more
difficult to organize than playing at home at least if you think about a
statistically relevant match of 10 or 20 games.

3. We have currently started of course playing with the Resurrection Fruit '05,
17 games are available, enough for beeing accepted in our list (minimum is 16
games against at least 2 opponents). It is alreday clear that it is much
stronger than the Ruffian 2.1. Maybe we will be able to present a small update
of our tournament list before the end of the year. But again there will be most
likely no game against the R40 as long as the machine from Hans van Mierlo is
not succesfully being repaired.

best regards
Stefan
