It is clearly possible, and there are many examples. It is easier to list those top programmers who *are* strong chess players, because they are so few: The only ones I am aware of are Chris Whittington, Hans Berliner, Vasik Rajlich and Vincent Diepeveen. I don't play chess at all, but if I did my Elo rating would probably be about one third of my engine's rating. I am one of the most awful patzers you will ever find. This *is* a handicap when developing my engine, but a very minor one. Tord
