I think a reason it would be good to trace backwards is that (for some
positions) we may find the stumbling block in our evaluation.  Conversely, it
may help us to reason out a special extension, or improve our positional
evaluation.

Once we find the pivotal point (we can't get past here) we can ask "Why can't
we?"

If we know the answer to the question, we may be able to overcome the problem.
