Computers will never be GM's, because FIDE will never give a computer a GM title (IMHO). Deep Blue never got the title GM. Deep Blue had a performance ratin around 2750 for match 1 and 2840 for match 2 :) The average GM rating is 2524. Computer programs have performances well above this on PII/AMD K6-II 400MHZ and faster (TPR's above 2700 =2, TPR's 2600-2700 = 2, TPR's 2500-2600 = 4, TPR's below 2500 = 0). Very consistently strong GM performance (IMHO) with half the TPR's above 2600. 2600 is spot number 84 on the FIDE list. :) On 200 to 350MHX machines, the issues is not as clear. The average rating for IM's is 2402. Computer program performance on this HW is: TPR's above 2700 = 0, TPR's 2600 - 2700 = 4, TPR's 2500 - 2600 = 2, TPR's 2400 - 2500 = 6, TPR's below 2400 =1). So this could be interpreted as strong IM or weak GM (6 above 2500 and 7 below 2500). Still some very strong GM performances, but a balance of GM/IM on the whole. IMHO. :) Best Regards, Chris Carson
