Subject: CM8000 Patch update

Author: John Merlino

Date: 15:00:12 01/08/01

Here are all of the significant items that have been addressed since my last
patch update, to the best of my memory. I may have missed one or two, or have
included one or two that were in my previous post, for which I apologize in
advance:

-- Fixed three Windows-2000/NT specific crashes. The first involved making a
wrong move in a tutorial question. The second involved Practice Openings and the
program making the last move in the opening. The third involved menu navigation.
The last of these no longer crashes, but still does not work perfectly, so the
team is still on it. These were the only known Windows-2000/NT specific bugs.

-- Made some modifications to the Winboard protocol parser that allow several
more XBoard engines to work properly with Chessmaster. Engines that send their
moves in SAN are now supported. Other notable engines that now work are Phalanx,
TAO and The Crazy Bishop. However, a few engines, such as Crux and Amy,
apparently only work if they are put in "post" mode by activating their
corresponding checkbox in the Thinking Lines window.

-- Fixed a problem with the minimum size of the Thinking Lines window that could
allow the user to size the window to make it appear as though there was no
thinking output being displayed.

-- Fixed a bug that would prevent game annotations to be saved in the PGN
format, copied to the clipboard or printed.

-- Fixed two bugs in the Solve for Mate feature. The first one could cause any
computer personalities involved in the game to get "out of sync" with the board
if the "Move" button was pressed after a mate was found. The second one could
cause an extra instance of The King engine to be left running after the "Cancel"
button was pressed after a mate was found.

-- You can now resign any game even when it is not your turn. If a human is
playing a computer personality, using the Resign feature will assume that the
human player is resigning, regardless of whose turn to move it is. If two human
players are in the game, then it will be assumed that the player that is
resigning is the one that is currently on the move. If two computer
personalities are in the game, attempting to resign will do nothing and the new
"Adjudication" feature can be used (in the case of games in the Tournament
Room).

-- Fixed a bug that caused improper formatting of the time represented by the
Time Stamp Annotation feature.

-- Fixed a bug involving Thematic piece movement sounds in which the proper
theme might not be used when switching rooms and/or shutting down and restarting
Chessmaster.

-- Fixed a bug involving the "Whitney Metal" and "Staunton Cherry Wood" piece
sets where the wrong set type could be placed on a board (i.e. the "Perspective"
version of the pieces placed on an "Over the Shoulder" board).

-- Added "context menu" right-click support to the Game Status window.
Right-clicking on this window will now bring up the same options as
right-clicking on the current room's wallpaper.

-- Fixed a bug in Move Advice that would not remove a pawn that was captured en
passant.

-- Fixed a bug in which using the Flip Board command on a perspective piece set
would not cause the pieces to draw properly.

-- The "TimeControl" PGN header tag is now supported. At this time, though,
there is no support in the PGN format of different time controls for different
players. If you are saving a game in PGN format in which there are different
time controls for White and Black, the "TimeControl" tag will display the time
control for White only.

The patch is still on schedule to be released in 3-4 weeks. Anybody who would
like the complete list of bugs that have been fixed, please let me know and I'll
e-mail you.
