Hi Jorge, Thanks for testing my engine! Nice to see that somebody actually uses the FRC version. It is very possible that you are right (although the number of games is of course so low that Gothmog could just have been lucky). In FRC games, the engines usually find themselves in murky, tactically complicated and positionally ugly positions right out of the opening. A great degree of positional sophistication is often not needed; just developing the pieces actively and throwing them wildly against the opponent's king is likely to work well. This is precisely what Gothmog is good at. Another factor which may explain the good results for Gothmog is that Gothmog is relatively weak in the endgame. FRC puts the endgame a bit further away, which should improve Gothmog's chances a little. You may also want to try the experimental FRC version of Glaurung, my new engine. The source code is available from: http://www.math.uio.no/~romstad/glaurung/g024-frc-src.tar.gz Unfortunately I cannot yet provide a Windows executable, because I don't run Windows. For the same reason, the program is completely untested. There are no FRC compatible GUIs for Mac OS X. If your hypothesis is right, Glaurung should also perform relatively better in FRC. It is almost as aggressive as Gothmog, and it plays clearly better than Gothmog in normal chess. Tord
