>I have fritz5.00 and my machine never lost moves >maybe it is only a problem of fritz5.03 > >Uri The only problem is that I TOO use Fritz 5.00! Now a few questions for you. 1-Did you copy the book on your hard disk? (silly question, I know!) 2-Did you import new games in the tree (if yes, approximately how much?) 3-Did it write down new learning in the tree often? Or did you just install it and use it to analyze/understand games without playing much? 4-Are you using Win95 (I am still using Windows 3.11/DOS 6.22) To test Fritz, I used a second account I own on the Internet Chess Club, and that is only for computers and programs, to test it against other programs (since personnally I am no real match for the program, as I saw (except maybe in 40 moves in 2 hours and even then...). Since the operation (transferring moves from Blitzin to Fritz back and forth) takes time and so creates a difference between both clocks, I was using the 99 ply level and Force move function. After each game, Fritz 5 was not learning, so I was copying every game into a temporary base and having it learn after each game dirrectly from the base and only for Fritz'side. To not have it learn the same games several times, I had to delete the olg games first before starting the learning process... Adding and deleting games from a .CBH base had a strange effect : after a while the base seems corrupted and would make Fritz 5 crash whenever a save or a clean up of deleted games is attempted. It would also crash if you attempt to make Fritz learn from that base. Deleting the hole base and creating a new one with the same name or a new one corrects the problem for a while. I do not know what the other person who, in rec.games.chess.computers, reported the same problem did or did not. But as he said, patching the program (is 5.03 the latest patch?) did not fix the problem, nor reinstalling the games a few times. Now, the tree being gigantic, it would take a lot of floppies to backup it entirely. I am wondering if only taking the other 2 files that go with the biggest one could allow to restore the previous learnimg and statistic values? For now, I stopped using it since I was too pissed off by the loss of 2...Nc6 (after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3)... Serge Desmarais
