There were two reasons:

(1) this trip is not cheap (USA to Germany). It would be one of those
cases where I pay my own way, and we already have a major trip planned for
this year (my family). I had hoped that the ICCA would "do their duty" and
host this event in North America as the original ICCA charter stipulated (this
event was supposed to _alternate_ between North America and Europe every 3
years, but that seems to have 'slipped' since it has been held outside NA
for the last three times (1992, 1995 and 1999 now).

(2) This also directly overlaps with the first week of classes in our Summer
term. And Missing at least a week of classes was not a reasonable choice. In
WCCC's of old, we played a couple of games on Sunday, and then had one round
on Mon/Tue/Wed and we were done. Not so any longer, making it harder for many
of us to attend. Longer events are good, but the time away from work is bad.
Catch-22...

I hated to miss it... had lined up a good machine that would have been very
competitive (16 cpu alpha, searching about 6M nodes per sec with Crafty). I
tried to get that machine for Ernst after he told me he would be using a normal
alpha, but it had unfortunately been committed to something else by the time
I asked them...

Perhaps next time...

One real problem was that an initial contact with the ICCA said that it was
necessary for the _author_ to be present. Which means I couldn't send anyone
else as I have in the past. But then it seems that this rule was relaxed after
the fact. Had I known, Crafty would definitely have been there...
