If you are going to be using the new Athlon for primarily computer chess, go get it right now, don't delay, as it is the fastest thing going for computer chess. But if you online game, play single player games, or use most office business applications, stick with Intel. I have a PIII 450, and an Athlon 600. I much prefer the PIII as it is WAY more stable, and I happen to play alot of Half-Life Counter-Strike. By far the PIII produces clearer graphics and better game speed. The Athlon system has a better video card, higher clock/bus speed, yet can not produce the same smooth scrolling graphics the PIII can. As for my business applications, the PIII and Althon open them with about the same speed, but with in the apps, the PIII converts most tasks quicker.
