Subject: Creating a GUI to control variables in a chess program

Hello,

Can anyone please help me?

I am pretty much new to computer chess programming but I
would like to attempt the following as part of a university project:

I would like to create a GUI to control some of the variables in a
game of chess e.g. to click a button that says, for example, "limit
search depth" - this would then limit the depth that Crafty searched
or inhibit its performance in some way. I would like to be able to
control varying aspects of a chess program and,
eventually, be able to perform a study on the different chess
personalities this would "produce" - and the users experience of
playing them.

Unfortunately - I do not really know where to start :-( I have
downloaded the source code of some programs (which looks quite scary - hence I
am considering simpler chess engines) but I need to consider which
development environment to use to hook up the GUI controls with the
code variables e.g. Visual C++(?). I dont know if I should be aiming
to alter a configuration file for a chess engine or whether I should
be directly altering the code???

I would appreciate any advice from anyone who has / who has tried to
hook up a GUI to a chess program (to alter variables I mean).

I am not looking to create a GUI for a board or anything like that -
just a method of accessing the source and changing some values.

Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.
