Well I think I know what you see:
You moves a3
King moves e5 with last pv e5 e3 Nc6 d4 Nf6 Be2
Your turn.
Fritz GUI send e3 to the King as a normal move, but don't let you see it on the
board. This is Fritz method of ponder, If you do e3 then he gets a hit, if not
well it was a try. (Isn't it so the UCI also work?)
The ponder move was sent with the right time seting 40/5 so he will do that move
(d7d5), But the gui don't showing you this because he know that it was a ponder
move. If you do e3 then the GUI anser with d5 and not letting the King in.
On my system The king was doing his own pondering after d7d5, maybe there is som
settings in the GUI, and when I played e3 he did not play d5 but the move he had
found through his (king) own.

It's look perfectly right to me and the strength should not go down because the
result is that he ponder on the right move.
