Subject: how much more mhz can GM's take

i find it very entertaining to watch a master try to beat a program on my
system, 1050 mhz. single processor. sometimes i feel sorry for them, they try
so hard, and have been through so much to get to the level they are on.
sometimes they think they are so close, they just keep coming back to only lose
again. it is amazing how they can make my score vary so much, and then how
steady my score is when playing a top comp at one of the sites. i think we all
agree that todays chess software running at 1000 mhz or more can win vs a GM,
but not everygame. the top programs in my opinion with a 1200 mhz t-bird, and
the new ddr ram, with a qualified operator, can give a top GM all that he wants.
with the new ddr ram, this system should search about 1250 kns. so i am curious
about the new 1700 mhz amds coming out sometime in the next 6 months. also tyan
has a new smp mb soon to be released. with this system, dual 1700's, dj should
hit about 2720 kns. if either deep shredder or deep junior is running on one of
these next year, i think this will be a new level of comp chess that will leave
most humans behind. also if mr. hyatt upgrades to 1.5 gig xeons, with his quad
system, i think this with crafty should play with most programs next year. with
quad 1.5 gig xeons running crafty, he should hit about 4000 kns. it seems that
we can be fascinated with the systems we have today , but we will be thinking
new hardware tomorrow, for the new programs that are developed. there might come
a day that a top GM would choose to not sit down against a computer, only to
lose. from then on, program strength advancements will be measured only against
other top programs. thanks kburcham
